SLT-MOBITEL Launches ‘Lankakonect’ Mobile App to Empower Sri Lankans Overseas SLT‑MOBITEL, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment & Tourism, has officially launched the Lankakonect mobile application. Unveiled recently at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, the app represents a significant breakthrough in the nation’s digital transformation journey. Acting as a complaint management platform for Sri Lankans living and working abroad, the Lankakonect app enhances their ability to raise and track grievances with relevant authorities. Developed by SLT-MOBITEL for the Ministry’s Consular Affairs Division and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), the app provides overseas Sri Lankan citizens and migrant workers with a secure platform to register, submit, and track complaints related to employment contract violations, abuse, unpaid wages, the whereabouts of loved ones, and other concerns in Sinhala, Tamil, and English. By digitising the process, the Lankakonect app eliminates long waiting times and unnecessary travel, allowing grievances to be raised anytime and from anywhere. Domestic workers, who are among the most vulnerable groups, can escalate urgent issues immediately. Once a complaint is lodged, officials from SLBFE and the Consular Affairs Division can access the system online and begin resolution processes. Each complaint can be tracked in real time throughout its lifecycle, providing continuous updates while enabling authorities to monitor progress effectively. The launch event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment. International partners, including the International Labour Organization (ILO), participated as technical partners in supporting the initiative. The project builds upon earlier digital advancements introduced by the Kuwait Embassy, extending similar innovation to a global platform for Sri Lankan citizens worldwide. In 2025, Sri Lankan overseas workers contributed a record USD 8.07 billion in remittances to the national economy, highlighting their critical role in sustaining families and strengthening the nation. The Lankakonect app is designed to recognise and support these contributions by keeping citizens connected to their homeland. Through this initiative, SLT‑MOBITEL reaffirms its commitment to the government’s vision of a fully digitised Sri Lanka, where technology drives progress and improves lives. The launch also signifies a broader move towards digitising overseas mission services, strengthening links between embassies and expatriate communities, and reinforcing a sense of national identity among Sri Lankans abroad.
