SLT’s SEA-ME-WE5 Cable Landing Station Project wins Gold Award at the National Project Management Excellence Awards

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), the national ICT solutions provider for the nation was the proud winner of the Gold award under the “Best Managed Project in Telecommunications Sector” category for its Matara SEA-ME-WE5 Submarine Cable Landing Station Project at the National Project Management Excellence Awards conducted recently by the Project Management Institute (PMI) Sri Lanka Chapter 2018. Mr Priyantha Fernandez, Chief Operations Officer & Chief Technology Officer and Mr. Mangala Samarajeewa , Chief Network Officer accepted the award on behalf of the company. SLT Chairman Mr. P.G. Kumarasinghe Sirisena and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Kiththi Perera were also present at the event.

The National Project Management Excellence Awards (NPME) is an annual awards programme that is conducted by the Sri Lanka Chapter of the Project Management Institute with the main aim of recognizing and honoring the best practitioners of project management and their achievements in the project management field. The main vision behind this is to encourage these individuals and organizations to continue to make outstanding contributions to the development of the country especially through the introduction of advanced project management concepts, techniques, best practices and theories.

The SEA-ME-WE-5 Submarine Cable System is the fifth Optical Fiber Submarine Optical Fiber Cable System running across South-East-Asia Middle-East Western-Europe with the latest state-of-the-art technology enabling extra bandwidth for global telecommunications. Sri Lanka Telecom is the partner from Sri Lanka in the SEA-ME-WE 5 Consortium which consists of eighteen global partners. The total distance of SEA-ME-WE-5 cable is over 20,000 km with an initial system capacity of 24 Tbps. It will ensure an ever increasing international bandwidth requirement for the country and will serve as a redundant network for the existing submarine cable systems providing uninterrupted connectivity to the outside world. The Matara Cable Landing Station which was commissioned in January 2017 is a full landing station, enabling SLT to deliver 24x7 dedicated services for the Consortium.
