SLT successfully completes first ever Colour Night Vision surveillance system in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Telecom PLC (SLT) successfully connected its first ever colour night vision (CNV) surveillance system in Sri Lanka, which uses advanced IP surveillance cameras. This project initiated and funded by the Chief Ministry of the North Central Provincial Council. This is also the second largest system installed by SLT thus far, with more than 100 advanced IP surveillance cameras spanning the important areas of Anuradhapura, Habarana and Polonnaruwa. The colour night vision surveillance camera system is capable of capturing coloured visuals during the day and night.

This surveillance system is enabled with centralized monitoring and connected to a single private network through an advanced fibre optic-based Carrier Ethernet Network (CEN) infrastructure. It provides real-time monitoring capabilities via high bandwidth connectivity in order to improve road safety, to aid in tracking crime and other offences that are committed in the streets. It also enhances national security by providing facilities to authorities of the Sri Lanka Police Department to carry out real-time video monitoring, to control cameras remotely, and to record, store and playback videos.

Each location is connected with the advanced technology of Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections through SLT Fibre optic, thus assuring highly reliable and highly secured connectivity. This exclusive end to end fibre connectivity ensures the quality of video feed with colours which supports Police to identify the colours and numbers of the moving vehicles. As part of the inherent social responsibility standards maintained by SLT, company has invested to improve telecommunication infrastructure in North Central Provincial Council area with 15km of Fibre optic cables has been laid exclusively for this project in order to facilitate public safety, especially during the Poson period, religious festivals and other activities. These main cities covered by the project are identified as transit cities to Colombo, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Matale and Kandy, where there is high circulation of general public. Also with the growth of tourism we have seen a dramatic growth in the number of foreign and local tourists visiting these cities and this initiative will ensure their security, especially that of people visiting the sacred cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, as well as wildlife safaris to Kaudualla and Minneriya.

This second surveillance system installation for street monitoring in Sri Lanka covers the key locations of the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts. This is part of a national level project established in order to support the Sri Lanka Police within the cultural heritage sites of Sri Lanka.

SLT successfully connected the country’s first and largest Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance system through its advanced fibre optic-based Metro Ethernet Network (MEN) infrastructure, which included 107 CCTV cameras, at the main intersections of the Colombo City and suburbs, in the year 2013. During the time span of the project, as it advanced with negotiations and implementation, the confidence of Government institutions on the capability of SLT, experienced a rapid growth. Along these lines, SLT is prepared to advance further and serve the potential for expanding the number of CCTV surveillance locations in the country, by providing its services in the future installations.

Following the successful surveillance system installation in the Western and North Central Provincial Councils, SLT is now geared to provide the same solution to other Provincial Councils with its proven track record of success to improve road safety, to aid in tracking crimes and to enhance national security in the country. The utilization of CCTV surveillance tapes in order to capture suspects in the Habarana criminal case in the recent past has triggered the interest of Provincial Councils to install CCTV surveillance systems.
