BSNL and SLT sign agreement to construct a submarine cable system between India and Sri Lanka

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) of India - the seventh largest telecommunications operator in the world and Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) – Sri Lanka’s premier communications provider – today signed a Construction and Maintenance Agreement (C&MA) to build the Bharat – Lanka optical fibre submarine cable between India and Sri Lanka. This submarine cable system will be established between Tuticorine (India) and Mount Lavinia (Sri Lanka) with the planned commissioning date being the early of Second Quarter 2006. Signing the contract on behalf of their respective companies were Mr. A. K. Sinha - Chairman & Managing Director of BSNL, Mr Shuhei Anan, Chief Executive Officer of SLT and Mr. Akihito Ohtake, Senior Vice President of NEC. Also present at the ceremony were representatives of SLT, BSNL and NEC.
