2011
Fitch Ratings upgraded SLT's Long-Term Foreign Currency (LTFC) Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to 'BB-' from 'B+'. Simultaneously, Fitch has affirmed its Long-Term Local Currency (LTLC) IDR at 'BB-' and National Long-term rating at 'AAA(lka)'. The Outlook is Stable.
   
In April 2011, BOI granted approval under the section 17 of BOI law, to the phase II of Telecommunication, IP, Broadband, Infrastructure Expansion [TIBIX] project. With this approval, SLT is entitled to import project related capital goods on duty free basis during the project implementation period of two years. SLT's spend for the expansion project will exceed US$ 187 million.
   
2010
The SLT group achieved over Rs.50 billion annual revenue.
   
2009
In November 2009, SLT redeemed the US100 million international bonds that were issued in 2004.
   
2008
One of the principal shareholders of the Company, viz. NTT Communications Corporation of Japan who held 635,076,318 shares of SLT, which constitutes 35.2% of the total stated capital of the Company has sold their holding in its entirety, to Global Telecommunications Holdings N.V. of Netherlands on a price of LKR 50.50. Subsequent to the above transaction, Global Telecommunications Holdings N.V. have announced that they will make a mandatory offer to the remaining shareholders.
   
On 12th May 2008. the Board of SL T decided to acquire a 75% stake in Sky Network (pvt) Ltd. a company incorporated in Sri Lanka by Lycatel Group, a pan-European prepaid telecom organization, to carry-on operations in Sri Lanka, in order to secure access to their wireless broad band frequency, by expending US $ 1m. By teaming-up with Sky Network SL T could leverage on its island-wide infrastructure for the provisioning of wireless broadband applications such as IPTV, Video on Demand, Educational Services etc. to the mass market. Currently SL T uses SLT Broadband technology for its broadband services. The Board resorted to this option as a licence for wi-max operation from the TRC had seen inordinate delays
   
2007
SLT has been successful in securing a Media Licence from the Ministry of Mass Media & Information to provide IP-TV services in the country. This will enable SLT to offer quality video and new integrated TV service over broad band networks.
   
On 16th May 2007, SLT received BOI status.
   
2006
Friday, June 09, 2006 SLT signed an agreement with Intel Corporation to deploy a Co-Marketing program for WiMAX, using a WiMax standard of 3.5 GHz frequency band in Sri Lanka. Intel is developing computer chips for WiMAX customer premises equipments (CPEs). The WiMAX network would be part of SLT’s overall strategy to connect the entire island with Next Generation Network (NGN), with its new CDMA network, fibre backbone and other infrastructure.
   
In December 2006, SLT announced its incorporation of a fully owned subsidiary in Hong Kong, SLT Hong Kong Limited. This was to operate as a point of presence enabling the alignment of the Group's Strategic direction of global connectivity. Initially, the PoP (Point of Presence) would provide seamless connectivity to traffic generated by the SEA-ME-WE IV and Bharat Lanka Submarine cables. The Total Initial investment on this project was HK Dollars 2.5 million, approximately LKR 35 million. SLT Hong Kong Limited is fully geared to provide services such as IP transit, IPVPN, IPSL and International voice traffic transit services to global telecom operators and corporates in Hong Kong. As part of the ongoing initiatives of SLT to go global, SLT Hong Kong Limited will aim to become an important point of presence of SLT connecting Asia with the rest of the world through Sri Lanka. The initiative of incorporation of SLT Hong Kong Limited will be a considerable step forward for SLT to become a regional telecommunication facilitator.
   
SLT inaugurated Dhiraagu - SLT submarine cable system between Maldives and Sri Lanka in December 2006. At an investment of USD 20 million by Sri Lanka Telecom and Dhiraagu of Maldives, the cable system aims to enhance economic growth via superior telecommunications in South Asia. The project is seeking to improve trade relations and telecommunications in the entire region.
   
2005
In January of 2005, consequent to a court order vacating an enjoining order obtained by Premier Communications International Ltd. (PCI) a company organized under the UK laws for the establishment and operation of an SLT branded calling card in the UK, SLT disconnected the PCI circuit connection. PCI defaulted payment to SLT in a sum totaling US$ 10,030,507.19.
   
Sri Lanka Telecom through its Internet service provider (ISP) SLTNet, has from its inception been a champion of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). With a mission to take the Internet to the masses, this ISP which has presently captured 75% of the local Internet market, has been keeping businesses in business despite turbulent market conditions. SLTNet has introduced several state-of-the-art and affordable products for the SME sector as well as other lucrative tools available to SME entrepreneurs including back - up of a company’s valuable data into a high security Internet Data Centre (IDC) facility, which would enable SLTNet’s SME customers to safeguard their company’s electronic track record and goodwill.
   
A recent addition to SLTNet’s high standards of customer service is the provision of on-site training for their corporate clientele.
   
The organisation also has in the market an Internet Prepaid Card which offers recourse to the unsubscribed dial-up market, keeping the traveling SME businessman in mind. SLT’s SME customer base also benefits from the company’s numerous points–of–presence (POPs) across the country, thus allowing subscribers to access the Internet for the cost of a local call at special discounted rates through a single number (150).
   
The company has a customer base of multinational corporations, large and small corporates, retail and domestic customers. With NTT of Japan as a strategic partner, SLT provides facilities and services to its customers, which are unmatched in scope. These services range from domestic and international voice, advance data transmission services which include internet services on leased lines, broadband [on SLT Broadband] and dial up, data circuits, frame relay solutions, to IP based services such as IP-VPN, total solutions of combination of multiple services, satellite uplink services and mobile telephony through fully owned subsidiary Mobitel.
   
The company was also awarded an AAA (sri) rating by a Fitch Ratings Lanka followed by a B+ international rating by Fitch International and Standard & Poor’s.
   
Mobitel expands to 300 GSM base stations in a record 18 months in August of 2005
   
In August 2005, Sri Lanka Telecom was granted authorization to deploy CDMA. In October 2005, SLT entered into a contract with ZTE Corporation (ZTE) of China, whereby ZTE will provide state -of- the-art CDMA systems for the successful implementation of the largest CDMA network. In November 2005, SLT launched SLT Citylink CDMA network in Anuradhapura. The Anuradhapura launch is the first in a series of the SLT Citylink network roll-out plan, which will be concentrating on providing connectivity to Sri Lanka’s rural communities. SLT Citylink would connect villages and rural areas not yet penetrated to all the cities of Sri Lanka, covering the whole country through an integrated network.
   
Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), for the first time in Sri Lanka, launched a web based e-Procurement system facilitating complete automation of the processes enabling ‘paperless’ transactions relating to Procurement of material and services. SLT’s eTENDER website provides suppliers with up-to-date information they need to provide quality goods at competitive bidding practices. With e-commerce facilities, SLT strives to cater more efficiently to its stakeholders and customers by providing value, service and performance.
   
On 13th September 2005, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) of India and Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) signed a Construction and Maintenance Agreement (C&MA) to build the Bharat – Lanka optical fibre submarine cable between India and Sri Lanka. The commissioning date was planned for early Second Quarter 2006.
   
SLT organized a one day seminar on Breakthrough Thinking, presented by internationally acclaimed presenter and best selling author Prof. Shozo Hibino. The seminar received a positive response from over 400 participants including private and public sector.
   
In October 2010, SLT expanded its SLT Broadband coverage into the Mt. Lavinia, Ratmalana, Moratuwa, Maharagama, Kelaniya, Negombo & Kandy areas.
   
November 2004
In November 2004, SLT successfully concluded the issuance of redeemable bonds, to the value of US$ 100 million - 6.875% five year notes due in 2009.
